Lt. Col. WM Carter of the 3rd VA Cavalry

Lt. Col. William M. Carter was a notable officer in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, a regiment recognized for its courageous service in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

  • Col. Carter was the Commander of Company E of the 3rd VA Cavalry.  His name is the first in the list of many on the Civil War monument in front of the historic courthouse at the county seat.  He is buried in the Hickory Hill family cemetery flanked by his parents who built the homeplace.
  • Battle of Trevilian Station: The regiment played a crucial role in this significant all-cavalry battle in June 1864. Despite intense fighting, the 3rd VA Cavalry helped repel Union forces, securing vital supply lines for the Confederacy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Lt. Col. Carter was wounded during the battle and died in Gordonsville, VA, on July 8, 1864. His service and sacrifice are emblematic of the era's bravery and dedication.

Maj. L W Long of the Confederate Army

Major L. W. Long served with distinction in the Confederate Army, remembered for his leadership and tactical skills:

  • Military Service: Maj. Long's leadership was instrumental in coordinating efforts during several key campaigns. His dedication and service earned him respect and admiration.
  • Lasting Legacy: Maj. Long died on June 11, 1900, and is buried on the Hickory Hill estate. His life and contributions reflect the enduring impact of the Civil War on those who lived through it.

A deposit of 10% by personal check with sufficient funds is due on sale day following the end of the auction with the balance due at closing in 30 days.  The high bidder will be required to sign a contract the day of the sale and pay the deposit.  NOTE:  By bidding at this sale, the Buyer hereby acknowledges receipt of and agrees to all these Terms and Conditions.
